the crucible

The Crucible

In the story of  "The Crucible" it's all about religion and Abigail who was the main character the creates a whole drama. In this story there are plenty of symbols, that are key to the dramatic story. Abigail was one of the reason that a lot of innocent people were hang. All started when Abigail and a group of girls went to the wood and they were trying to do witchcraft. Abigail wanted Proctors love so she drank blood. He was a man who was married to Elizabeth and which he truly loved. Abigail uncle saw them and one of the girls was naked and the rest of them were dancing. One of the girls who name was was Betty Parris got so scared that his dad saw them, that she didn't wanted to wake up. Parris who was Betty dad's sent for Reverend John Hale of Berly, he was an expert on witchcraft, to determined whether Betty is indeed bewitched. All this event were happening in the Puritan New England town of Salem but, with the it spread to America.

In the villages of Salem where the group of girls lived, people started a rumor about witchcraft. The girls to save themselves and wouldn't be hang or wiped, they started accusing people that they were with the devil and doing witchcraft. One of the first one that was accused of witchcraft was Tituba who was an easier target because she was dark skin women  and no one would believe her. Tituba wasn't hang, they only wiped her.  Many innocent people were hang because of the girls. In this play there's a lot of symbolic symbols like on Act 2. Act 2 shows Marry Warren who works for Proctor as a servant. Marry Warren gave to Proctors wife a doll which had a needle under the dress. This evidence, Abigail used it against Elizabeth to accused her of doing witchcraft on her. Abigail got in an argument with Proctor before accusing Elizabeth. She got mad because he told her that nothing could happen between them because he was in love with Elizabeth. Abigail got so upset that she stab herself with a needle.

For that same reason that Abigail got so mad that she stab herself  with a needle and accusing Elizabeth. The court made a search in Elizabeth house to see if they could  find a doll that made her guilty, they found the doll and took Elizabeth with them. This doll made a good symbol in this act because its a symbol of voodooism. As the play continuous, they show another symbols. One of the themes of this play is intolerance because society, in which the church and the state  are one, and the religion is strict. These also has hysteria because the people in the community was tearing apart for many people accusing other of witchcraft. That people were getting hysterical in every way.

In the time that all of these events were accruing it was a chows between people each people turning there back at each other. Some of the people used the witch subject to accused people that they wanted revenge or to take their land. People around this time were in crisis/panic. At the end of the play Proctor tries to safe his wife. He tries to uncover the lie of Abigail. Proctor tells the Salem court that he committed adultery with Abigail. That made a whole turn in the play because they arrested him and they were  going to hang him. His wife wasn't hang because they found that she was pregnant and that they were going to wait  until the baby was born.

In conclusion, " The Crucible" has a lot of symbolic symbols that are key to understand the play. The basic themes of it are intolerance, hysteria, and accusations, confessions, and legal proceeding. The play develops and you see more panic in  people how are scare of their own shadow.  People couldn't say or do anything that could involve them in witchery. Everyone was scare and terrified. This is how it started that people believe in witches. Religion was a big part in those times because church was the support they had and god .
